Abstract

The 7th International Scientific Conference on Genetics/breeding sciences and education (Pariy readings), was hosted 19 to 21 March 2018 at Uman National University of Horticulture to discuss the future of the national plant breeding education. Plant breeding remains a vibrant, multidisciplinary science. A contemporary breeding curriculum should include on experience with the inheritance and artificial selection of complex traits, id est differential reproduction in plants (or other organisms) driven by the choices of human breeders selecting among natural and artificial variations in plant populations; general biology of plants (reproductive biology, physiology, Mendelian genetics, phytopathology, entomology); principles of quantitative genetics and selection theory, principles and practice of plant breeding, seed science and related sciences; as well as plant biotechnology and molecular biology, genomics, plant breeding methodology, and statistical methods for data analysis, and integrated pest management and other pest sciences. Plant breeding education should also comprise several professional skills, including knowledge of agronomy, crop production, general and applied horticulture, agroecology and soil science, other languages, business management, and intellectual property rights. The private sector should play an increased role in the plant breeding. Additional support for plant breeding education programs may come from the private sector and the Ukraine government.
