Genealogical analysis of quantitative traits in Aberdeen-Angus
Abstract
Aim. Analysis of animals' origin within Aberdeen Angus breed in relation to the parameters of exterior and body weight dynamics. Methods. Genealogical analysis was conducted to allocate the animals into appropriate lines; livestock valuation methods were used to measure the quantitative physical characteristics of the animals. Results. Within the sample of Angus breed studied the best lines are the Sauthom Extra and the Ilinmera Leda, being characterized by rapid and steady weight gain until four years of age and the best livestock judging scores. Analysis of the received data and data obtained for US Angus population (American Angus Association database) showed the similar pattern of animals’ quantitative characteristics. Conclusions. The animal’s origin determines its individual quantitative traits, it should be taken into account prior to genetic testing.
