Biodiversity of farm animals as an object and subject for preserving the genetic resources of animal breeding in Ukraine
Abstract
Aim. Aim is to characterize the quantitative and qualitative composition of native populations of local and endangered breeds of farm animals. Methods. Analysis of quantitative and qualitative composition of the gene pool of indigenous breeds of farm animals were based on data from the State Registry of breeding animals and the results of annual comprehensive individual assessment. Results. By the results of the inventory of livestock resources there were examined the trends in reduction of populations of individual breeds and identified statuses of risk for their extinction in Ukraine. Conclusions. The narrowing of the biological diversity of farm animals leads to a decrease in the consumption of domestic products and reduces the cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people.
